Jean-Jacques RampalBorn in Paris in 1954, Jean-Jacques Rampal, like his father the flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal, studies at the Medical University for 2 years.From 1977 to 1980, he made his apprenticeship in Mirecourt, birthplace of the french violin making, in the workshop of Jean-Jacques Pagès where he learnt the making of stringed instruments (violins, cellos, violas).From 1981, he worked in the workshop of Charles Beare in London, where he learnt the restauration and expertising of antique instruments. From 1983 on, he came back to Paris to work with the famous French violin-maker Etienne Vatelot with whom he deepened for the next 15 years his knowledge in restauration and expertise and took care, restored and tuned the instruments of the most renowned soloists such as Yo-Yo-Ma, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Slava Rostropovitch, Boris Belkin, Salvatore Accardo, Isaac Stern, Maxim Vengerov, Patrice Fontanarosa, Olivier Charlier and many others. In 1994, Jean-Jacques Rampal is appointed Expert in stringed instruments for the Court of Appeal of Paris. In 1998, he takes over the workshop of Etienne Vatelot. He also gives lectures to promote violin¬making in Europe, Canada, Corea and Japan.Recognized as international expert, many musicians and colleagues violin-makers frequently call upon his knowledge to obtain certificates of authenticity.His expertise is also used for many auction sales all over France.A violin competition for young musicians also bears his name.Jean-Jacques Rampal is also member of the Association of violin and bow makers of France, of the International Entente of violin and bow makers, Vice-President of the company of experts in furnitures, objects of art and collection and honorary president of the summer music school and festival Musicale in Courchevel.
